How to make the refreshing summer cocktail that tastes like a tropical vacation

This deliciously refreshing cocktail is perfect when you are looking for something light to sip on a hot summer day. With just four ingredients, it is also one of the quickest and easiest to mix up.

As for the origins of the drink, there are contradicting claims, but it’s widely believed it was created in the late 1960s or early 1970s by Andy MacElhone, son of Harry MacElhone from famous Harry’s New York Bar in Paris.

The stunning blue colour will make this retro-chick cocktail an instant hit when served at your next summer garden party!

Blue Lagoon Cocktail

Blue curacao not only adds a beautiful blue hue. The popular liqueur exclusively made on the island of Curacao in the Caribbean is flavoured with Laraha orange peel, an orange that grows on the island and gives the liqueur a sweet orange taste with a subtle bitter finish to it.

BTW, curacao is not naturally blue. The colour is achieved through food colouring. So, while the blue is nothing more than an eye-catcher, it’s behind the stunning looks of cocktails particularly recognized for their vivid blue or greenish colours. The Blue Margarita, Blue Hawaiian or the Drunken Mermaid are just some of them.

How to make a Blue Lagoon cocktail

The original Blue Lagoon cocktail requires to be shaken which cools and slightly dilutes the drink. However, more recent recipes just ask for blending all ingredients in a highball glass. It’s up to your individual taste which version you prefer. However, topping the drink with chilled lemonade and adding additional ice cubes does really make it perfect without the need to give it an extra chill in the cocktail shaker.

Blue Lagoon Cocktail

To make one glass of refreshing Blue Lagoon, you need:

30 ml vodka
30 ml blue curacao
15 ml lemon juice
120 ml lemonade

Fill a highball glass halfway with ice. Add vodka, lemon juice, blue curacao and top up with the lemonade.

Alternatively, add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until well chilled than strain into a large cocktail glass over crushed ice.

Garnish with a lemon wheel.
