This February, brighten up your margarita cocktail with the beautiful red ruby hues of blood oranges.

If you follow along on my blog, you will have seen that one of my kitchen challenges this year – or shall we call it my home mixology challenge – is to create a different margarita cocktail for each month of the year.

Which gives me the perfect excuse to play around with new margarita variations, to find the most perfect one for the month.

And what better way to brighten up the freezing and still rather greyish days of February with a joyful, citrusy margarita.

Made with freshly squeezed blood orange juice, tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and a splash of agave nectar, the cocktail is easily assembled in almost no time.

The intense citrus flavour of the blood orange juice adds additional depth, and the ruby red colour makes the drink really pop.

How to Make the Best Blood Orange Margarita

This citrusy, tart blood orange margarita could not be easier made. You can make it either just for yourself or a larger crowd.

Serves 1

60 ml tequila
15 ml Cointreau
40 ml fresh blood orange juice
30 ml fresh lime juice
a splash agave nectar

Rim a margarita glass with sea salt.

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker over ice. Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds until the outside gets slightly frosty.

Strain into the margarita glass filled with ice.

Garnish with a blood orange slice and some mint leaves.
