If you follow my blog, you might have noticed my fondness of small, independent hotels with lots of local flair. Le Boutique Hotel , located right in the heart of the beautiful historic part of the city of Bordeaux, is fully fitting this description.
The cosy four-star luxury hotel is looking at a rich history. Built in the 18th century as the mansion for a wealthy local family, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage classified building; and its beautiful classic sandstone facade is typical for the grand buildings of its time.
As soon as you enter the hotel through the impressive wooden door, you will feel the high attention that is given to any detail of your stay to make it the most inspiring experience possible; from the friendly and helpful staff to the meticulously thought through design and fit-out of the whole property.
Several of the historic elements have been retained, in particular the beautiful stair at the main entrance along with a narrow revolving stair in one of the adjacent buildings now integrated into the property.
Everywhere in the hotel you will be reminded of the regions strong connection with wine: The rooms bear the names of famous Bordeaux chateau and there are even wines growing in the small courtyard, planted by several of the chateau that gave the rooms their names.
All rooms are designed individually in a sleek contemporary look and feature furniture and art from Philippe Starck, Kartell and Eichholtz.
However, the place everything in Le Boutique Hotel seems to evolve around is the gorgeous wine bar. Located in a glass pavilion opening into the beautiful little courtyard, here too you will find furniture designed by Philippe Starck.
The wine bar is part of the city’s official ‘urban wine trail’ created by the Bordeaux Tourism office and there are nearly 250 wines on offer with about 60% from the Bordeaux appellations and the rest a mix of excellent international labels. The bar also offers a daily blind wine tasting from 5.15pm to 6.15pm with wines from across France which are changing daily.
Though there is no full restaurant in the hotel, the wine bar offers charcuterie and cheese platters along with a selection of delicious tapas and sweets. The bar is open from Tue to Sat from 12am to 11.30pm and Sun and Mon from 5pm to 11.30 pm. On Sundays, there is also a branch from 11.30am to 1.30pm.
In the morning, the wine bar doubles as breakfast room. A small breakfast buffet is set up in the separate adjacent wine lounge and whilst small offers everything from fresh bread and pastries to jams, cereals, yoghourts, charcuterie, cheese and a little egg station where you can cook your egg to your own liking (or order eggs any other style from the kitchen).
The hotel is also just a short walk away from some of the city’s major squares and monuments, including: Esplanade des Quinconces, the Grand Theatre and Porte Cailhau, and there are also plenty of restaurants and bars close by.
