Living under two hours drivetime from the Mosel vineyards, I have explored the region at various occasions and stayed at several of the areas’ hotels. Where: Mühlheim an der Mosel

Literally translating to Romantic Wine Hotel Court of Justice, this gem is set in a 17th century winery surrounded by a spacious 10,000 sqm park.

Schanz. Restaurant. Hotel.

Where: Piesport

The family-run hotel set in one of the highest lauded vineyard areas in the heart of the Middle Mosel might not look spectacular, but when it comes to standout food experiences, it is one of the highest lauded dining places in the Mosel Valley and Germany.

There are only 12 rooms, each individually designed inspired by culinary themes and booking into the hotel when planning a visit to Schanz Restaurant means you can thoroughly enjoy an evening of indulgence without having to bother about the time and having to drive or arrange transportation.

The 3-star Michelin Schanz Restaurant is clearly the beating heart of the place. Chef Thomas Schanz is widely recognized for his French-inspired creative and artfully arranged dishes including the renowned truffle egg foam and seasonal pot-au-feu dishes. The restaurant is furthermore associated with a local winery, offering excellent wine pairings, particularly the region’s flagship white Riesling.

The intimate and relaxed atmosphere along with the outstanding gourmet experience and nearby attractions of the Mosel Valley make this small family hotel and restaurant the perfect base for an unforgettable stay.

Rüssels Landhaus

Where: Naurath/Wald

Hidden away in a side valley of the Mosel, the lovely boutique hotel owned and operated by Ruth and Harald Rüssel respectively the resident wine expert and chef – while the latter is now joined by son Frederik in the kitchen – is the perfect romantic gourmet hideaway.

Set in a converted historic mill, the 14 themed rooms and suites are all individually designed, featuring natural materials, rustic charm and modern comforts inspired by the beautiful natural surroundings of the Hunsrück forest and mountains.

A large garden area and an extensive terrace overlooking a little pond invite to linger and daydream.

The two on-site restaurants both focus on regional, seasonal produce. Restaurant Hasenpfeffer features traditional country house dishes while the Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant offers high-end, creative ‘New German’ cuisine, often incorporating foraged ingredients from the surrounding Hunsrück forests and game hunted by chef Haral Rüssel. Tailored wine pairings, particularly recommending fine local Mosel wines are completing the outstanding culinary offer.
